De Los Content Creator Internship

Ends on

The Los Angeles Times is looking for a video-forward digital media creator to join the De Los team with a goal of starting conversations, strengthening our connection with our followers and making our account an essential follow for anyone with a strong interest in Latino culture and identity.

This self-starting, internet-obsessed person will create fun, voicey, personality-driven videos for De Los Instagram and TikTok accounts. We are looking for a journalist with a deep understanding of the Latino community, not just in Southern California but across the country, and has some experience working across platforms to create compelling social media content.

De Los seeks to bring to life the vibrancy of the U.S. Latino experience with a focus on culture and identity, building on the success of the Latinx Files newsletter, digital Día de Muertos altar and packages on the Chicano Moratorium, Fernandomania @ 40 and LA Vanguardia. The initiative is multi-platformed in approach, with rich visual and audio storytelling, provocative commentary, short documentaries and live events.

The De Los content creator will create social video from start to finish. This may include creative approaches to promoting the work the team is doing (for example, creating social video content around our guides and events like this). We are also looking for someone who has their own original ideas like the former De Los content creator intern.

This person will work in sync with Times’ audience engagement editors and their team, which coordinates with the newsroom’s journalists to best optimize content for platforms on social media. They will also work closely with our De Los editors and reporters to extend the reach of our content.

If you join us, you will:

  • Be part of the De Los team, creating content in the form of graphics, videos, memes and text for social audiences
  • Collaborate with other teams including audience engagement editors, designers, video journalists and reporters to create content tailored for social media audiences
  • Create quick-turn posts for social media in the form of video, graphics, images, audio or text
  • Maintain social media standards and practices and establish a voice for Times’ social media presences across platforms
  • Experiment on new social media platforms, using data and audience feedback to guide strategic initiatives
  • Interact and engage with our readers and build online communities for Times journalism and staff

 QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience writing voicey copy or otherwise creating new things for the internet
  • Versatility in working across words, images and video and providing technical feedback for each type of media
  • Experience writing on Latino topics or working with Latino or Spanish-language media outlets
  • A portfolio showing us cool things you've posted in various places online. The portfolio should demonstrate that you have a deep understanding of the type of content and visual voice that will resonate on whichever platform/app, etc., you are posting
  • Ability to successfully juggle multiple projects with varying deadlines and timelines
  • A team player and effective communicator who’s able to work comfortably with a wide variety of personalities and skill levels

CRITERIA: Applicants must be actively working toward an undergraduate or graduate degree and must be eligible to work in the U.S. Graduates may qualify if you've finished school within one year of the start of the internship. A car is required. Internships are for students who have not worked professionally as staff journalists. A basic understanding of the work is required as interns are expected to hit the ground running when they arrive. A previous internship is recommended. With training from our staff, we will help develop, polish and elevate your work and add to your journalistic toolbox.

TO APPLY: Submit a brief cover letter; resume with three references; one-page personal essay; and links to any online work. There is no prompt for the essay.

The deadline to apply is Dec. 12 at 11:59 p.m. PST.

All applicants will receive an email notification of the committee’s decision by March 1.

We use Submittable to accept and review our submissions.
