Interested in working with some of the best journalists around? We offer 10 weeks of intensive, hands-on experience in a region where big stories are the norm. We place interns throughout the Los Angeles Times: Metro/Local, Entertainment and Arts, Sports, Politics, Business, Features/Lifestyle (Fashion, Food, Travel, Home Design, Plants), Foreign/National, Editorial Pages/Op-Ed, Multiplatform Editing, Photography, Data and Graphics, Design, Digital/Engagement and in our Sacramento bureau. (One of our multiplatform editing interns comes through the Dow Jones News Fund’s national selection process, and that deadline is Nov. 14.) These are paid internships and placements usually run from June to late August.
The deadline to apply for spring and summer 2025 positions is Nov. 15, 2024. Applicants for Spring 2025 applicants will receive an email notification of the committee by Feb. 1, 2025, and summer internship applicants will receive an email notification by April 1, 2025. (click here for the FAQ).
We place interns throughout the newsroom in departments that help make our essential journalism possible such as in Audience Engagement, Copy Desk, Data/Graphics, Design, Photo and Video. These are paid internships with spring sessions starting between January and March and summer placements usually running from June to August. There's also the possibility of off-cycle internships that have rolling start dates.
QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants must be actively working toward an undergraduate or graduate degree and must be eligible to work in the U.S. Graduates may qualify if you've finished school within six months of the start of the internship. Applicants for the reporting positions must have a valid driver's license and access to a car in good working condition. (A car is not required for the Audience Engagement, Copy Desk, Data/Graphics and Design internships.) Internships are for students who have not worked professionally as staff journalists. A deep understanding of the work is required as interns are expected to hit the ground running when they arrive. This is an advanced program, with one to two previous internships strongly recommended. With training from our staff, we will help develop, polish and elevate your work and add to your journalistic toolbox.
TO APPLY: Submit a cover letter; resume with three references; one-page personal essay; and up to six work samples. There is no prompt for the essay.
DEADLINE: The deadline for priority L.A. Times internships has passed. However, you can still submit an application by June 1, 2025, to be considered for future roles including internships and other early-career opportunities. Please note: You will only receive correspondence if your application is being considered for a position.
